4: Overcoming Financial Concerns: The Value of a Life Story
In the fourth in a series of stories addressing people’s concerns about signing up for a memoir-writing class, I share the experience of one woman and how she found a way to overcome her financial challenges and discover the value of her life story.
Betty stared at the flyer for the memoir-writing workshop for what felt like the hundredth time. She had always wanted to write her life story, to leave a legacy for her children and grandchildren. But when she saw the cost of the course, she sighed and put the flyer aside. On a fixed income, she couldn’t justify the expense.
A few days later, Betty was visiting her friend, Rose. As they chatted over tea, Betty mentioned the workshop. “I would love to do it, but it’s just too expensive,” she said, shaking her head.
Rose smiled. “Betty, I took a course with the workshop facilitator before and he offers discounts with “early bird” tickets if you sign up online. He also said that if anyone was having financial difficulties, they should call him and discuss it.”
