Artificial Intelligence and End-of-Life Planning
There’s been a lot in the news recently about ChatGPT, the latest manifestation of artificial intelligence that surpasses Siri and Alexa. Whether you think it’s a boon or a threat is debatable but there’s no denying that artificial intelligence is here to stay.
So why’s an End-of-Life Planning Facilitator like me interested in artificial intelligence? It’s partly because I’m taking a course to understand it better and because I’m interested in how AI (artificial intelligence) might affect end-of-life matters.
So, recently, I sat down to have a chat with ChatGPT. I asked in what way AI might have an impact on end-of-life services.
When it came to funeral services, ChatGPT told me that AI had “the ability to automate tasks, provide personalized experiences, and enhance overall end-of-life services”. It could, for example, power virtual and augmented reality so that funeral services could become a more immersive experience for those who could not attend in person. It could also generate personalised memorials using video, photos, music, and light and sound effects, something that is already being used in Japan. AI can also generate 3-D printed caskets and holographic projections of the deceased.
