Secrets to a Happy Life

Although I’m in good health, I’m well aware that at my age (70), I have more years behind me than in front of me. That’s why I’m thinking more about what I want to leave behind for my children and grandchildren. And while I don’t have a lot of belongings or money to leave them, I can pass on a different kind of legacy — my values.

In my work as an End-of-Life Planning Facilitator, I often ask people, “If you had died yesterday, how would you want to be remembered?” This question focuses on your values, principles, your personality and the qualities you hold dear. I have begun recording a series of short videos in which I share some of the important memories of my childhood and youth, friendships, and accomplishments, as well as stories and other pearls of wisdom I’ve accumulated along the way.

I’ve also identified 5 “secrets” or practices to living a good life that I want to pass on to my children and grandchildren: having positive relationships; pursuing your passions; practising gratitude; maintaining good health; and continuous learning.

  1. Positive relationships: Relationships just don’t happen, they require nurturing and maintenance. Family, friends, and colleagues all require your attention and care. Spending quality time together, having meaningful (sometimes difficult) conversations, and participating in social activities can boost your happiness…
